3rd Workshop on Broadly Accessible Quantum Computing

Building on the success of the last two iterations at PEARC‘24 and ‘25, the 3rd Workshop on Broadly Accessible Quantum Computing at PEARC26 will place greater emphasis on the latest advancements in quantum computing (QC), it’s integration with high-performance computing (HPC) and AI, and related applications. This year’s edition expands the discussions of practical applications, hybrid quantum-classical strategies, and funding opportunities. New elements include deeper focus on hybrid quantum-classical workflows, software stacks and tooling readiness, institutional access and facilitation models (including support for non-R1 institutions), and the policy and funding frameworks shaping near-term adoption. Through invited talks, interactive panels, and community contributions, we will address workforce development, policy considerations, and strategies for making quantum resources more accessible. Designed for participants of all backgrounds, this workshop fosters collaboration and knowledge exchange to advance QC adoption in the broader research computing community.

Programming High-Performance AI-Coupled HPC Workflows

Incorporating AI capabilities into traditional HPC workflows introduces many challenges for application developers, as it brings together two very different computational paradigms. Python can serve as a common language to bridge these domains, but, as a general purpose language, the exact interfaces to scientific applications, workflow design motifs, and runtimes that enable performance and scalability are still being explored and developed. This tutorial will help attendees develop skills for building AI-coupled HPC workflows using the Dragon HPCproject along with GPU-accelerated tools like PyTorch andvLLM. Attendees will first learn the fundamentals of using DragonHPC for Python multiprocessing on GPUs across multiple nodes. Hands-on exercises will then introduce them to aspects of the DragonHPC API for orchestrating bothPython and traditional HPC (MPI-based) applications, leveraging GPU acceleration, coupled through fast data exchange with DragonHPC’s in-memory distributed dictionary. From there, we will explore a number of execution and data-transfer motifs common to hybrid AI-HPC workflows. attendees will interact with lead developers from DragonHPC and learn about its applications in the scientific workflows community.

Guideline to Writing a Successful Proposal for ACCESS and Other National Compute Resources

Navigating the ever-changing national landscape of the national computing resources is difficult for any researcher may they be beginners and seasoned long-time users. During our long involvement in the review and allocation process of resources of the NAIRR, ACCESS, leadership-class programs and National Labs (Bridges-2,Expanse, Anvil, Delta, Vista, Horizon, etc.) we have helped many scientists to succeed. We ask to kindly accept our tutorial submission at the PEARC 2025 conference that will address systematically the two most persistent problems that researchers face during the application process. Selecting the appropriate resource among the variety of choices offered and writing a successful application that translates a solid science project into a strong proposal ready to take on the competition.

Beyond Resources: Integrating AI, Quantum, and the Workforce of the Future - ERN Summit 2026

This Birds of a Feather (BoF) session extends the dialogue from the Ecosystem for Research Networking (ERN) Summit 2026 by bringing its key findings and strategic insights on cyberinfrastructure, AI, Quantum, and workforce development into a highly interactive forum. Designed for active participation, the session will move beyond presentation to engage attendees in facilitated discussions to identify priorities and challenges related to multi-institutional collaboration, cyberinfrastructure access, advanced technologies, and workforce development.

Participants will play a central role in shaping the conversation by sharing experiences, responding to Summit topics and questions that will help shape actionable strategies that strengthen cross-institutional partnerships and support more inclusive, effective research ecosystems. This BoF emphasizes support for non-R1 and under-resourced institutions, which is an essential perspective in national research cyberinfrastructure discussions.

SynAPCell: Modeling the Presynaptic Neuromuscular Junction

Modeling synaptic function requires integrating fast electrophysiological dynamics with spatially resolved stochastic molecular processes. Existing simulation tools typically address these domains separately, making it difficult to capture how action potential waveform, channel gating, calcium diffusion, and downstream molecular interactions jointly shape synaptic behavior. We present SynAPCell, a computational framework that dynamically couples NEURON-based electrophysiological simulations with MCell4 reaction-diffusion modeling. SynAPCell uses action potential waveforms to drive time-dependent channel gating and calcium influx in MCell4, enabling synchronized, multi-scale simulations of presynaptic active zones. The framework is implemented in Python and enables dynamic switching of time-dependent rate tables, configurable molecular observables, and reproducible stochastic simulations controlled by user-defined random seeds. We demonstrate the approach using a mouse neuromuscular junction model that integrates voltage-gated calcium channels, calcium buffering, calcium-activated potassium channels, and synaptotagmin-based calcium sensors across multiple action potentials. SynAPCell provides a reusable and extensible foundation for spike-driven, multi-scale simulations of synaptic and neuromuscular systems, with explicit support for reproducible execution in high-performance computing environments.

The 50-State AI Plan: A Grassroots Approach to Building a US AI Continent

This session explores the emerging fabric of state and regional initiatives that will empower American leadership in AI and quantum computing. Using Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Utah, Oklahoma and others as case studies, we examine how state-led initiatives are aligning regional assets with America’s AI Action Plan, the Genesis Mission, and the National AI Research Resource (NAIRR) in building a US version of an AI Continent. Crucially, we discuss how these and other federal initiatives can leverage state-level “factories” to advance research, workforce development, and economic growth by embracing grassroots innovation tailored to local and regional strengths. This discussion also builds upon the recent NSF-CASC Workshop on Envisioning NAIRR State and Regional Hubs for Educational Transformation, which identified key pathways for scaling workforce development through state and regional cooperation. We highlight essential partnerships between academia, state governments, industry, philanthropy, and federal agencies to drive these efforts. Participants will discuss strategies for democratizing access to research computing and data resources, streamlining technical deployment, getting state involvement, and building the AI workforce pipeline. By fostering inclusive, state-led hubs, we can attract investment, train thousands of workers, and ensure US technological sovereignty in AI.

A Precision Emulation Approach to the GPU Acceleration of Ab Initio Electronic Structure Calculations

This study explores the use of INT8-based emulation for accelerating traditional FP64-based HPC workloads on modern GPU architectures. Through SCILIB-Accel automatic BLAS offload tool for cache-coherent Unified Memory Architecture, we emulate FP64 matrix multiplications in the LSMS CPU application in the MuST suite without code changes. We find that accuracy depends on both arithmetic precision and the properties of the operator, which can be dealt with through tunable precision emulation. Unlike traditional mixed-precision approaches, this method preserves original algorithms while optimizing hardware utilization. We showcase the potential of improving accuracy and performance at the same time. This work highlights the potential of AI-driven hardware to transform HPC, advocating for adaptive precision strategies in future scientific computing.
