PSC Projects Take Two HPCwire Supercomputing Awards

PSC received two HPCwire Readers’ and Editors’ Choice Awards at the 2014 International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage and Analysis (SC14) in New Orleans.

• Readers’ Choice, Best Use of HPC Application in Life Sciences: UCLA and PSC – Using the Anton supercomputer at PSC for the development of cholesterol-lowering drugs. Anton’s ability to provide long-timeframe simulations of molecules enabled researchers to see how distant changes in a medically important enzyme’s structure produce changes in the enzyme’s “active site,” offering clues for future drug design.
• Readers’ Choice, Best Data-Intensive Application/Use: Carnegie Mellon University and PSC – Kidney exchange modeling on PSC’s Blacklight. CMU’s organ-matching program, FutureMatch, made use of Blacklight’s large memory and number of cores to build better matching algorithms, showing that quantity and equitability of matches between live donors and organ recipients can be increased without losing the benefits of the current matching system.
