
PSC’s Paola Buitrago Co-PI on CMU-Led GEM-AI Project to Harness AI to Find Critical Minerals

A new artificial intelligence framework will better identify critical minerals in the ground, increasing the U.S.’s access to these valuable materials and reducing the cost and time for exploration and extraction.
The research team pursuing GEM-AI, led by Principal Investigator Artur Dubrawski, Alumni Research Professor of Computer Science at the CMU School of Computer Science, includes Co-PIs Paola Buitrago, PSC Director of AI & Big Data, and Chi-En The, a project scientist within the Auton Lab at CMU’s Robotics Institute. This leadership team will work with Sandia National Laboratories and the Colorado School of Mines to use AI to identify geologic and biological clues that could indicate the presence of minerals essential for advanced manufacturing in technology, aerospace, energy and defense. The project was awarded funding by the U.S. Department of Energy as part of the Genesis Mission, and is one of three such awards to CMU.
