The Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (PSC), a joint research center of Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh, was established in 1986, and for over 30 years has provided university, government and industrial researchers with access to several of the most powerful systems for advanced computational research, communications and data storage available to scientists, engineers and scholars nationwide for unclassified research. PSC advances science across a wide spectrum of fields, including artificial intelligence / machine learning, medical imaging, weather modeling, cell biology, and genomics.

PSC is seeking a motivated self-starter to join our team as a Technical Writer. This is an exciting opportunity to help advance cutting-edge scientific discovery by leading the development of technical and scientific publications and creating informative end-user documentation and training materials  as part of a team of scientists and software developers.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Work with subject matter experts to determine documentation needs and requirements.
  • Create effective end-user documentation for project tools and technologies for a broad audience that could include writing user guides to use computing resources and tools, drafting FAQs, developing demos and how-to videos, developing academic posters, drafting video scripts, guided tours, and other educational techniques.
  • Create detailed documentation for project teams including standard operating procedures, developer guides, new user welcome instructions, etc.
  • Review and/or copyedit content developed by other members of the team.
  • Gather and incorporate feedback from users to improve usability and efficacy.
  • Lead the development and drafting of articles and papers for publication in peer-reviewed journals with technical and scientific project teams.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant technical or scientific field.
  • 3-5 years’ industry experience as an effective technical writer.
  • Proven ability to quickly learn and understand complex topics.
  • Previous experience writing documentation and training materials for multiple audiences.
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills, with a keen eye for detail.
  • Strong team player who can build strong relationships within all levels of the organization and across project teams.
  • Demonstrated willingness to learn.
  • Preferred certification through the Society for Technical Communicators.

Skills and Experience:

  • Proven ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, with an eye for prioritization.
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams to improve the user experience: design, UI, and content, visuals, and diagrams for technical support.
  • Proficiency in the use of MS Word, MS PowerPoint, Google Apps (Docs, Sheets, Slides, etc).
  • Ability to use multiple content management systems including,  GitHub and WordPress.
  • Preferred experience using design and/or video editing software and collaborative platforms such as Adobe Creative Cloud and Canva.
  • Preferred previous software development experience.
