Applying to the Bridges-2 Early User Program

The Bridges-2 Early User Program (EUP) is a 30 day opportunity, expected to start at the beginning of November, for you to port, tune and optimize your applications early, and to make progress on your research. During the EUP, you will have access to the full application and software library stack to build and test your applications, user support, and related documentation.

Given the short program period, you should be ready to start work as soon as system access is granted. The Bridges-2 team will be working with you to address any issues, so we will need your feedback as part of acceptance testing and transition to operations. At the end of the EUP, you will be asked to complete a short survey that addresses usability, reliability, and science enabled during the testing.

There is no cost or charge to any XSEDE grant for usage during the Early User Program.

Who is eligible?

If you are a Principal Investigator (PI) who already has a Bridges-2 Research or Startup allocation, you are automatically approved for the EUP.  If you wish to participate, you only need to send an email to bridges2@psc.edu agreeing to provide feedback on the EUP, including a brief description of what you were able to achieve, near the conclusion of the 30-day Early User Program. Be assured that SUs used during the EUP will not be charged to your XSEDE grant.

If you do not have a Bridges-2 Startup or Research allocation, we invite you to apply to participate in the EUP.  You must be a researcher or educator at a U.S. academic or non-profit institution, and a faculty member or postdoc must serve as the PI. Applications to the EUP are accepted through the XSEDE Resource Allocation System (RAS) until October 30, 2020. Instructions on how to apply are provided below.

What do I need to apply?

Everyone who applies through RAS will be required to submit a brief (two page maximum) Resource Justification document. It must be a PDF. This document serves to establish a mutual understanding of your goals for participating in the 30 day EUP. Please include the following five items:

  1. Goals: Please summarize the area of research on which you’ll be working during the 30-day Early User Program, and any specific research or performance goals that you hope to achieve.
  2. Resource selection: Please summarize why you have selected these specific resources (e.g., Regular Memory, Extreme Memory, and/or GPU nodes, and storage) to achieve these scientific goals.
  3. Please confirm that your team agrees to provide feedback on the Early User Program, including a brief description of what you were able to achieve, near the conclusion of the 30-day Early User Program.
  4. Special considerations, if any (e.g., a need for VMs to support persistent web services or databases, interactive access to a large number of nodes, minimum of 2048 cores/job)

If needed, you will be able add further comments and clarifications in the Comments/Justifications field provided in the application form.

What software and datasets will be available?

You can check the list of software to be installed on Bridges-2 for the EUP here.

If these do not meet your needs, you can request specific software or datasets that your research needs during the EUP by completing these forms:

How can I apply?

The application process is slightly different depending on whether you have a currently active XSEDE grant (on any system) or not.

If you do not have an active XSEDE grant

If you do not have an active XSEDE grant, apply for the EUP via a Startup grant application.

Before you can apply

You must create an XSEDE User Portal account if you do not already have one.

  1. Go to portal.xsede.org.
  2. Choose Sign in in the upper right.
  3. In the next screen, choose Create account.

Note: Anyone else who will have access to this grant must also have an XSEDE User Portal account.

Gather the information you will need

To complete the application, you will need to have these things handy:

  • Resource Justification document, described above, in PDF format
  • CV (2 page limit) for the Principal Investigator (PI) and all co-PIs, in PDF format
  • XSEDE portal usernames for anyone who will have access to this grant
Apply

When your XSEDE portal account is created:

1. Log in to the XSEDE portal at portal.xsede.org.

2. Click Allocations in the top navigation bar.

3. On the next screen, under the Startup heading, click on Start a New Submission.
4. On the next screen, click Begin Guided Submission. There are six steps in the submission process, which are displayed across the top of the window. Most are sefl-explanatory.

In the Personnel screen, you will need the XSEDE portal userids for anyone to be included in this Startup grant.

  • Note that the default Role is “Allocation Manager”. Be sure to change this for the PI and any co-PIs.

In the Resources screen, choose the Bridges-2 resources that you would like to use. Be sure to also choose Bridges-2 Storage.

  • To remove a resource chosen in error, click on it again.
  • For each resource requested, a form will open on the right. Complete the fields for every resource you are requesting.
In the Documents screen, upload your Resource Justification document and a CV for the PI and any co-PIs.

  • These are the only documents required. You do not need to upload “Main”, “Code Performance and Scaling” or “Progress Report” documents.

5. When you have finished all six screens, click the green Submit button to submit your application.
