Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center Network Engineer Recognized for Research

PITTSBURGH, October 7, 2008 - Two organizations have recently recognized Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (PSC) senior network engineering specialist, Matt Mathis, for his network research.

PSC User DiMatteo featured on NOVA

PITTSBURGH, September 25, 2008 - ”The science television program NOVA has featured PSC user Tiziana DiMatteo. A NOVA show titled "Monster of the Milky Way" features DiMatteo discussing her simulation of a collision between the Andromeda and Milky Way galaxies and the super-massive black hole that would form as a result of this event in the distant future. The show, which aired originally in October 2006, re-aired this month on PBS.

NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program

The National Science Foundation aims to ensure the vitality of the human resource base of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in the United States and to reinforce its diversity by offering approximately 900-1,600 graduate fellowships in this competition pending availability of funds.

PSC Participates in $10M Gates Foundation Grant to Stop Spread of Infectious Disease

PITTSBURGH, August 19, 2008 -The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation awarded $10 million to the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health (GSPH) for the Vaccine Modeling Initiative (VMI), a research partnership involving the University of Pittsburgh, the Pennsylvania State University and Imperial College London. The objective is to help select new vaccines that will have the best chance of stopping global infectious disease outbreaks. Headquartered at GSPH, VMI also includes collaboration with Johns Hopkins University, Medecins Sans Frontieres Epicentre, the University of Georgia, and computational modelers at the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center. PSC scientist Shawn Brown is a co-principal investigator on the project.

Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center Again Supports Major NOAA and University of Oklahoma Forecasting Effort

PITTSBURGH, July 2, 2008 - Once again this year during spring storm season, NOAA (the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) mounted a major experiment in storm forecasting. As has been the case many times over the past 15 years, computational support came from the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (PSC).

PSC's "WiiMD" Wins
Best Demonstration at TG '08

PITTSBURGH, June 19, 2008 - The Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (PSC) won the award for "Best Demonstration at TG08" during the annual conference of the TeraGrid, the National Science Foundation's program of cyberinfrastructure for U.S. science and education, June 9-13 in Las Vegas. A PSC team of two scientists and a University of Pittsburgh student received the award for "WiiMD," an innovative project that merges the video-game technology of the Nintendo Wii (pronounced "we") with interactive supercomputing.

PSC Mentors Local Students to Win TeraGrid Science Competition

Other Pittsburgh-Area Students Also Receive Recognition

PITTSBURGH, June 18, 2008 - Matthew Stoffregen, a junior at Woodland Hills High School, won first prize in a science competition at the third annual conference of the TeraGrid, the National Science Foundation's program of cyberinfrastructure for U.S. science and education. Other local high-school and university students also won recognition at the conference, held June 9-13 at the Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas.
