About the Program

Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center, in collaboration with Rice University's Center for Excellence and Equity in Education, presents TeacherTECH, an intensive five-day Summer Technology Institute for Southwestern Pennsylvania middle school science teachers. The institute will focus on developing teachers' skill levels in:

  • integrating technology tools in the science classroom
  • fostering awareness of gender and diversity issues that target all students' full participation in science and technology.

The five-day TeacherTech Institute will build technology skills for teachers to integrate technology into the middle school science curriculum. The program will focus on the use of technology tools which can be used to enhance hands-on exploration of scientific concepts in the classroom. The technologies to be introduced include the use of CBLs and CBRs for data collection, the use of Excel for data analysis and presentation, and the use of computer simulations to build deeper understanding.

Session leaders will model the process to be used in the classroom to develop technology-supported activities that will be inquiry-based and open-ended. Middle school technology activities will be directly related to adopted instructional materials and state standards. They will help address essential learnings and key components as described in the Science Curriculum Framework for grades 6, 7 and 8.

Participants will have time to develop their own skills, and will be required to design activities that will be used to enhance their classroom teaching during the 2004-2005 school year. Reflective discussions will be incorporated to help participants understand the technology, content and equity related classroom strategies that are being modeled by the workshop instructors.

Each lunch session will include presentations from various speakers who will focus on specific career areas related to technology. These speakers will include women and minority leaders in the fields, who will present "personal journeys" or information about the educational path that led them to success in their chosen field.
