SLASH2

SLASH2 is an open source, wide area network friendly distributed file system featuring multi residency, system-managed data distribution, data integrity verification, and much more.  SLASH2 was created by PSC.

When managing large data sets, several needs arise:

  • geographical replication for data availability and safety
  • partial replication for wide area access performance
  • performance comparable to accessing data locally
  • familar interfaces to access the data, especially with the emergence of cloud computing
  • methods for sharing data in research collaborations

Often the burden is placed upon users to solve these issues. This requires that researchers learn to use data management tools, deal with diverse environments and manage data transfers on their own.

SLASH2 handles these tasks at the system level, alleviating the burden from the user.
