Comet Shoemaker-Levy9 July 1994 Impact with Jupiter

questions / comments

Mordecai-Mark Mac Low, University of Chicago

In collaboration with Kevin Zahnle of NASA Ames Research Center, Mordecai-Mark Mac Low of the University of Chicago used the CRAY C90 at Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center to run a series of simulations of the comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 impact with Jupiter, July 1994. He used ZEUS, a program developed at the Laboratory for Computational Astrophysics of the National Center for Supercomputing Applications, to model the gas dynamics of the shock waves and explosion that occurred when the comet crashed into Jupiter's atmosphere.
