Upgraded CRAY Running at Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center


Prototype CRAY T3E-900 will be on display at Supercomputing '96.

PITTSBURGH -- A prototype CRAY T3E-900 supercomputing system, installed at Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (PSC) since September 3, shows significantly enhanced performance on a range of applications software. It achieves speedups of up to 1.5 times per processor over the current CRAY T3E system, installed earlier this year at PSC, and it represents a projected six-fold improvement in scientific throughput over the CRAY T3D, Cray Research's first highly parallel system introduced in 1993 at PSC.

"This upgraded machine offers unprecedented scientific computing capability," said PSC scientific directors Michael Levine and Ralph Roskies in a joint statement. "We're excited to introduce it to the U.S. research community, who we know are eager to use it. We expect the T3E-900 to make new inroads on some of our most challenging, socially significant scientific problems, such as weather forecasting, global climate change and the design of new drug therapies."

The T3E-900, announced today in a separate news release from Cray Research Inc., is an upgraded version of the CRAY T3E, announced by Cray in September 1995. It features high-performance Digital Equipment Corp. processors with a peak performance of 900 million floating-point operations per second (Mflops), compared to the 600 Mflops peak speed of the chips in the 256-processor CRAY T3E in PSC's machine room at the Westinghouse Energy Center, Monroeville, Pa. PSC's production T3E will be upgraded to a T3E-900 early in 1997.

"For over two months," said James Kasdorf, director of supercomputing for Westinghouse Electric Corp., "this prototype has been exceeding expectations for speed and reliability. It has been heavily used by leaders in the national scientific community to develop their applications. On 14 different applications packages, it has demonstrated speedups up to 50 percent over the production T3E, with a 33 percent reduction in running time."

PSC will show its prototype T3E-900 at Supercomputing '96, the annual scientific computing conference, held this year in Pittsburgh, Nov. 17-22. It will run demonstration applications that include:

The Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center, a joint effort of Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh together with Westinghouse Electric Corp., was established in 1986 by a grant from the National Science Foundation, with support from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
