Another area of discussion between Ralph and Mike in those early days when the proposal was floating around in their minds was the operation of the Center. Westinghouse was providing time on their Cray supercomputers to Ralph’s Scientific Computing students so he contacted the person he had been working with there. After reading the NSF solicitation, Jim Kasdorf said to Mike and Ralph “I can provide you with all you need to know about how to set up and operate a supercomputing center, but I don’t have a clue what faculty researchers would do with it.” So, Jim added the missing piece and he helped design the Center and assisted in writing the initial proposal, .….. The Westinghouse involvement started with Jim and developed into very strong support by their management. Westinghouse’s contribution to the Center has been a key component of our success.
And we are proud to have Jim on the PSC staff now, working on new technologies and plans.
