Outreach and Training
We offer a variety of workshops, both at PSC and off-site, on subjects ranging from code optimization and parallel programming to specific scientific topics.
In addition to workshops, we also hosts symposia on high performance computing topics.
We are pleased to present monthly workshops sponsored by XSEDE on a variety of HPC topics. Each workshop is telecast to several satellite sites. See the page for a particular workshop for a list of the sites that will carry that workshop.
This workshop is intended to give C and Fortran programmers a hands-on introduction to MPI programming. Both days are compact, to accommodate multiple time zones, but packed with useful information and lab exercises. Attendees will leave with a working knowledge of how to write scalable codes using MPI – the standard programming tool of scalable parallel computing.
Training for new XSEDE users is offered several times a year, using web-based teleconferencing software. The session offers an introduction to using XSEDE resources and is targeted at users who have just received their first allocation on XSEDE. Check the XSEDE training calendar for upcoming dates.
Bioinformatics Internship, June 3 - August 2, 2013

Through this program, students, faculty, and researchers at minority serving institutions will work directly with the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center staff in Pittsburgh on a bioinformatics research project of the participant's choosing. As a part of the internship, participants will attend the center's Bioinformatics Summer Institute. Financial support in the form of lodging and transportation is available to eligible Bioinformatics Internship participants through the National Institutes of Health Minority Access to Research Careers (MARC) grant: T36-GM-095335. Bioinformatics Summer Institute, June 18 - 28, 2013

This two-week intensive training workshop seeks out students, faculty, and researchers at minority serving institutions that need a robust background in bioinformatics for their teaching and research. The first week of bioinformatics training at the workshop focuses on the analysis of a gene and/or protein family. The second week focuses on assembling and analyzing data from next-generation sequencers. Accelerator Programming with OpenACC and CUDA, July 16, 2012
Offered in conjunction with the XSEDE12 Conference, this full-day tutorial addresses the two main programming models in use today for adapting HPC codes to effectively use GPU accelerators. The two half-day sessions share some common techniques for achieving best performance with an accelerator.
Accelerating Applications with OpenACC, April 18-19, 2012
Together with NVIDIA and PGI, PSC presents a hands-on workshop on GPGPU programming using OpenACC,an open standard for compiler directives to make accelerators easier to program.
Parallel Programming: Using Blacklight, December 5-6, 2011
This workshop features programming techniques which help you to take advantage of large shared memory machines. Training is conducted on PSC's Blacklight, the largest shared memory machine in the world.
TeraGrid/Blue Waters Symposium on Data-Intensive Analysis, Analytics, and Informatics, April 14 -15, 2011

Desmond Workshop, October 27, 2009
The newly released version (v.2.2) of Desmond software from DE Shaw Research, used for molecular dynamics simulations of biological molecules, was introduced. The basic concepts underlying Desmond and how to run simulations and analyze results were covered.
The workshop was co-hosted by the National Resource for Biomedical Supercomputing (NRBSC) and the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (PSC), with instructors from DE Shaw Research, the NRBSC, and the PSC.

The Parallel Programming and Cluster Computing workshop focused on techniques and tools for parallel computing. This workshop was offered at Louisiana State University and simulcast at Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center.
TAGPMA Federated Identity Workshop, April 29, 2009
The 9th meeting of The Americas Grid Policy Management Authority held at PSC in Pittsburgh PA. This all day event, open to the public, included presentations from vendors offering security and identity services such as Verizon Business Services, SafeNet & Aladdin.

Intel Corporation experts presented the latest architectures and how to take advantage of them for modeling and simulation codes, focusing on the upcoming generation of very large shared memory machines.

Petascle Applications Symposium, June 2007
This symposium targeted researchers planning to respond to the NSF solicitation, Accelerating Discovery in Science and Engineering Through Petascale Simulations and Analysis (PetaApps). It featured invited presentations and panels by leading developers of highly scalable software infrastructure, and included discussions of Multilevel Parallelism and Locality-Aware Algorithms.
Introduction to the Cray XT3, August 2006
This workshop introduced current and prospective users of NSF's TeraGrid systems and other leading edge resources to PSC's Cray XT3 supercomputer. It was taught by Cray and PSC and supported by Cray Research, Inc.
