XSEDE Holds First Quarterly Meeting at PSC
PITTSBURGH, September 1, 2011 — Hosted by the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center, the first quarterly meeting of the Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE), was held in Pittsburgh from August 30 to September 1.
A partnership of 17 institutions, XSEDE, the most advanced, powerful and robust collection of integrated digital resources and services in the world, was officially announced on July 25. The five-year, $121 million project, supported by the National Science Foundation, replaces and expands upon the NSF TeraGrid project.
“Since the project started in July, there has been a great deal of activity, and this is our first regular project meeting,” said XSEDE project director John Towns of the University of Illinois’s National Center for Supercomputing Applications. “It has been gratifying — and a tribute to the project staff and our planning — that the project has remained amazingly coherent during this start-up phase. XSEDE is off to a solid start with the promise of interesting things to happen.”
Meeting participants included 41 members of the XSEDE management team, representing 13 partner institutions and the NSF Office of Cyberinfrastructure. The meeting was held at the Holiday Inn Pittsburgh on the University of Pittsburgh campus.
