PSC AFS directories

As a user of PSC's AFS cell psc.edu, you receive two directories of AFS space for your work.

The directories are (username is your username):

/afs/psc.edu/usr/username
This is your AFS home directory, and it contains 10 MBytes of permanent space.

If 10 Mbytes is insufficient for your computational needs, please contact User Services with your justification for more disk space. Remember that PSC users also have archival storage available in FAR, the PSC archival system.

Your AFS home directory is backed up weekly. As with any file system, it is always prudent to keep a second copy of any particularly important file in another location. You can store important files in FAR, the PSC file archive, or on your local machine.

There is a subdirectory under your AFS home directory named OldFiles. This contains a copy of your complete AFS directory tree as of the previous night. Please check this directory for a recent copy of any file that has been accidentally deleted before requesting a file restore. To request a file restore, contact User Services.

Please be aware that by default system:anyuser has read and lookup permissions on your AFS home directory. This allows any AFS user in any cell to list and read your files. Restrict access to your files by changing the AFS permissions on your directory.

You should read the document: Configuring your AFS environment, to learn how to properly setup your AFS home directory.

/afs/psc.edu/tmp/users/username
This is your AFS temp directory, and it contains 100 MBytes of temporary space.

Remember, this space is temporary, and files can be deleted at any time. When possible, we try to delete only those files that are at least two days old.
