2008 Advanced Program
Program objectives:
- Build on CAST introductory program to how computational thinking supports theory and experimentation in scientific inquiry.
- Build experience using computational tools (modeling and simulation) to develop understanding of complex scientific concepts.
- Emphasize the need to encourage students to consider careers in science and technology
Workshop logistics
- Dates:
June 25-26, 2008 - Location: PSC offices in Oakland (300 S. Craig Street)
- APPLICATION DEADLINE HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO JUNE 13
- Acceptance letters will be sent by May 30
Criteria for teachers
- Completed CAST Introductory Workshop (2006 or 2007)
- Willing to share new skills with other teachers in district
- Willing to help plan and lead subsequent workshops
Teachers will receive
- Training from teachers experienced in using modeling and visualization tools
- Support as they use the tools in their classrooms
- Act 48 credits
- Professional development as a peer mentor
- Stipend of $200
- Lunch and parking each day
Teachers are expected to
- Attend each workshop session
- Bring own laptop if possible
- Use at least one model, simulation or visualization during the 2008-09 school year
- Act as mentors and possibly teachers for subsequent workshop classes
