Position: External Relations Director 3283
This position is responsible for managing, developing and expanding the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center's (PSC) external relations: communications and public information efforts; State, local and other governmental relations, working in coordination with relevant university offices; coordination with local universities; outreach efforts to industry; and educational programs from K-12 through professional. Other activities include but are not limited to representing PSC to other external communities, generating ideas for new external relations activities or programs and/or changes to existing activities to increase general awareness of PSC with the goal of increased funding, greater impact and improving national technical expertise and competitiveness. This position works directly in collaboration with the Scientific Directors.
Master's degree or equivalent combination of training and experience; 10 years of professional experience that includes various levels of technical and leadership roles. Minimum of 6 years in a management capacity of a relevant technical area including management of multiple project groups. Some experience with external relations including public information, government relations, industrial relations, or education and outreach; Familiarity with current technology in computing hardware, computer architectures, systems software and networking as they relate to high-performance computing environments; ability to successfully manage multi-functional or diverse areas including planning and organizing; ability to set priorities and to balance conflicting priorities; ability to function competently and exercise leadership in a team environment involving highly skilled professionals while maintaining group morale; ability to respond quickly and effectively to changing situations; ability to assimilate new ideas rapidly, to originate new concepts or approaches and to innovate; excellent analytical, organizational, supervisory, reasoning and problem solving skills; ability to interact effectively with campus community, the high performance computing community, government and private funding sources and other external entities; excellent verbal, written and presentational communication skills; and ability to maintain or oversee accurate and detailed records; Normally sedentary with some mobility; requires ability readily to travel off site, at times frequently, to other campus locations and to other cities; Ability to work under pressure in a rapidly changing technological environment while collaborating effectively with, and coordinating the efforts of, others; Some weekend and evening hours will be required. Some travel will be required.
