Remembering David through photos
David filled his personal web page with his art, intellect and humor.
There are so many stories I could tell. So many wonderful recollections of him that end in a laugh. I picked this one because its so typical of how Dave and I interacted. Soon after I got hired at PSC, Dave called me into his office and asked my opinion on buying a new workstation. Anxious to please and impress my new boss, I quickly went and got him some quotes on what I thought was the best bang for the buck. It was quick, it all happened in about an hour. I didn’t think much of it at the time. Two weeks later, the hardware arrived, exactly as I had quoted it.
I realize now that this was a cunning trick. I would be completely responsible if the hardware didn’t work the way I said it would. A moment of fear gripped me, maybe I should have checked everything more carefully. I felt the weight of responsibility. He trusted me. He listened to me. He followed my recommendation. From that moment on I knew that what I did and said would count to him. This is a rare and endearing quality for a boss. Doubly so for a friend.
Anybody who knows Dave, knows that he didn’t always follow anyone’s advice. Certainly not mine. But I know he actually listened and considered what I said. That made me feel like a valued staff member, and it made me work very hard to get it right for him. I will continue to work hard and get it right for him.
